Celebrating Soccer with Hotshot: Euro and Copa América 2024

If there’s one thing that brings people together and ignites passions worldwide, it’s soccer—or football, depending on where you’re from. It’s more than just a game; it’s a global language that connects people worldwide. Soccer promotes cultural exchange and ignites global excitement and pride in one’s country. Nowhere is this more evident than in the thrilling tournaments of the Copa América and the UEFA European Championship (Euro).

The Copa América is the leading international soccer tournament for national teams in South America. Organized by the South American Football Confederation, it is the oldest international continental football competition, first held in 1916.

On the other side of the Atlantic, The UEFA European Championship, commonly known as the Euro, is the national European teams' primary international soccer tournament. Organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), it is one of the most prestigious competitions in the world of soccer, showcasing the best talent from across Europe.

According to ESPN, the format of the Copa América is as follows: “The 16 teams were drawn into four groups of four nations. The group winners and runners-up will advance to the knockout rounds. It is then a straight knockout tournament, with extra time and penalties if necessary. There will be quarterfinals, semifinals, a third-place playoff, and a final.” The Euro format is slightly different, with 24 teams drawn into six groups of four nations. This structure allows for a broader representation of European soccer talent.

Speaking of soccer, we at TheArchive wanted to highlight the film Hotshot, featuring legendary soccer player Pelé, in celebration of the Euro and Copa América 2024. In Hotshot, Jimmy is deflated by his wavering career in an American semi-pro soccer league and held back by his lack of discipline. He leaves his privileged life behind to fly south to Brazil in search of the once-legendary soccer star Santos (the Iconic Pelé), who has turned his back on the game. Despite their initial friction, the two come to admit that they both need help and that they both have something to prove.

The character of Santos in Hotshot is akin to the legendary players who have graced the Copa América and Euro stages. These tournaments have seen the likes of Lionel Messi, Pelé, Cristiano Ronaldo, and countless other stars who inspire and mentor the next generation of players, much like Santos (Pelé) does for Jimmy.

Hotshot, the Copa América, and the Euro celebrate the beautiful game’s power to unite, inspire, and transform. Whether through the thrilling matches of international tournaments or the personal journeys of players like Jimmy, soccer’s global magic continues to captivate and connect us all.
