Horror Films To Start the New Year - 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple & 3 Cult Horror Gems to Watch Now
The early buzz surrounding 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is so compelling. This isn’t just another sequel trying to revive a familiar IP. It feels like a continuation that actually wants to say something new.
Danny Boyle, the original director of 28 Days Later, the first in the franchise, is producing; Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War) is returning to write; and lastly, Cillian Murphy will be back in his leading role. With this team, it feels like 28 Days Later is something stranger, darker, and more philosophical. Early coverage from The Guardian and Deadline, and interviews with director Nia DaCosta, suggest a film that’s less about sprinting through apocalyptic ruins and more about what kind of world grows out of the ashes.
To get in the mood, we pulled three very different horror films from our library, each one exploring different nightmarish themes: apocalyptic, psychological, and supernatural.
Mutant (1984) — Now in 4K
Released in 1984 & streaming in 4K on our TheArchive website & app as well as in full on our ThrillGore YouTube Channel Two brothers, Josh and Mike, travel to a small Southern town for what’s supposed to be a simple vacation. Instead, they find a place that feels eerily hollowed out: residents missing, streets empty, and something deeply wrong humming under the surface.
When Mike disappears, Josh teams up with a local sheriff and a schoolteacher to search for him, only to discover that the town has been poisoned by toxic waste, turning its inhabitants into blood-craving mutants.
Don’t Go In the House (1980)
Don’t Go In the House follows Donny Kohler, a man whose childhood abuse at the hands of his sadistic mother has left him deeply, irreparably broken. As an adult, his long-dormant psychosis resurfaces, and he begins stalking women with a flamethrower, luring them into his decaying childhood home.

One Dark Night (1982)
Where the previous two films deal with physical and psychological corruption, One Dark Night moves into the occult.
After a famous Russian occultist, Karl Raymar, is found dead alongside six mysterious victims, strange supernatural forces begin to surface. Meanwhile, high school student Julie Wells is undergoing an initiation into an exclusive club called The Sisters, a rite that requires her to spend the night alone in a mausoleum.
She is, of course, not alone.
