With roughly two months of Summer left, this week's blog is dedicated to one of the best activities you can do during Summer break: a classic American road trip.
The cultural phenomenon that is the American road trip has been romanticized in literature and film due to the diverse and vast geography of the United States, the accessibility of the automobile, and the American pursuit of freedom and adventure.
The cross-country road trip has become a recurring subject in American literature, film, television, and art. For many Americans, spending several days on the road is an almost universal experience, whether undertaken for enjoyment or simply because circumstances require it. It can feel at once like a tradition and an inheritance.
The American road trip has become a popular subject in film because it can tell so many different kinds of stories. Some road trip movies focus on adventure and freedom, while others explore friendship, family, self-discovery, or the desire to escape everyday life.
Films like Easy Rider helped establish the open road as a symbol of freedom and rebellion. Thelma & Louise uses the landscape of the American Southwest as the setting for a journey that becomes much bigger than the short getaway the characters originally planned. For a darker look at the American wilderness, National Parks: Secrets and Legends explores the mysteries connected to North America’s national parks. The documentary series goes beyond the familiar campgrounds, hiking trails, and scenic overlooks to investigate stories involving unexplained deaths, secret military operations, cults, prehistoric creatures, and other strange legends. It presents the national parks not only as places of natural beauty, but also as landscapes filled with history, mystery, and unanswered questions. With summer still underway, there is plenty of time to plan an adventure of your own, or enjoy one from home through these films and series!
