A Month of Killers: Slashers Born from True Crime
There’s something uniquely terrifying about horror movies that draw from real-life events. While masked killers and supernatural slashers have their place, the idea that the story on screen really happened is what really changes. Over the years, some of the scariest movies of all time have taken inspiration from true crime cases.
Slashers are always frightening, but those based on true events leave a lingering fear after the movie is over. They remind us that evil doesn’t always come with a mask or a supernatural force; it can be a neighbor, a co-worker, or a stranger.
Here are some horror films based on real stories that will terrify you this Halloween!
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Perhaps the most infamous “true crime” slasher, Tobe Hooper’s masterpiece was loosely inspired by Ed Gein, a murderer and grave robber in Wisconsin who was known for crafting household items and clothing from human remains. While Gein’s crimes weren’t actually done with a chainsaw like the film suggests, his evil and despicable legacy laid the foundation for Leatherface and decades of horror storytelling.
Psycho (1960)
Alfred Hitchcock’s classic is another film influenced by Ed Gein. Norman Bates’s obsession with his mother and his macabre lifestyle behind the motel desk were drawn directly from Gein’s disturbing psychology. It remains one of the earliest examples of blending true-crime stories with cinema.
The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976)
This underrated film is based on the Phantom Killer murders that terrorized Texarkana in 1946. The film’s pseudo-documentary style gave it an unnerving realism that made audiences feel like they were watching a dramatized police case file.
Wolf Creek (2005)
Set in the Australian outback, Wolf Creek was inspired by several real-life killers, including backpacker murderer Ivan Milat. The film’s raw violence and bleak atmosphere make it one of the most disturbing slashers of the 2000s.
Manhunt: Search for the Night Stalker (1989)
The newest addition to the true-crime slasher canon brings audiences back to 1985 Los Angeles, when Richard Ramirez, called “The Night Stalker,” left California paralyzed with fear. Unlike fictionalized killers, Ramirez preyed on everyday people in their own homes, striking randomly and without pattern.
Manhunt follows the pursuit of two detectives, Sergeant Frank Salerno and Lieutenant Gil Carrillo, as they struggle to connect seemingly unrelated crimes with little evidence to go on to catch a killer. What sets the film apart is its raw portrayal of a city under siege and the chilling reminder that sometimes real killers are far scarier than the ones Hollywood invents.
This Halloween, revisit the classics inspired by true crime, but don’t miss Manhunt: Search for the Night Stalker. It’s a haunting story rooted in reality, and proof that the scariest monsters are the ones who walk among us.
