Happy Halloween from TheArchive

Halloween brings the annual flood of terrifying movies; in this blog, we want to highlight some great horror movies, new and old. TheArchive offers some uniquely disturbing selections, including what was once considered among the scariest films of its time. Whether you’re watching the classics or discovering new nightmare fuel in modern releases, there’s no better time to immerse yourself in the thrills and chills of horror than on Halloween night.

Mark of the Devil

Adrian Hoven and Michael Armstrong’s Mark of the Devil was famously dubbed “positively the most horrifying film ever made” upon its release, showcasing graphic intensity. Cool Ass Cinema calls it “one of the signature examples of 1970s exploitation at its most grueling.” Over 40 years later, Mark of the Devil still manages to leave modern viewers shifting uncomfortably in their seats.

Count Christian von Meruh (Udo Kier) is a witch hunter apprentice to Lord Cumberland. He believes strongly in his mentor and the ways of the church but loses faith when he catches Cumberlund committing a crime. He slowly begins to see for himself that the witch trials are nothing but a scam of the church to rob people of their land, money, and other personal belongings of value and seduce beautiful women. This controversial German film stars Udo Kier (Ace Ventura, Swan Song, Hunters, Nymphomaniac) as Count Christian Von Meruh. Available now on TheArchive!

The Substance

Since its release, The Substance has caused quite a stir in the film community. This feminist horror film explores aging in Hollywood, womanhood, and society’s fetishization of youth in a way no film ever has before, through the vehicle of outlandish, gory, and truly disturbing body horror.

Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), famous for her aerobics show, is hit hard on her 50th birthday when her boss decides to let her go. Just as she grapples with the shock, a lab steps in, offering her a substance that claims it can turn her into an improved version of herself (Margaret Qualley). In theaters and streaming now on MUBI!

Amityville: The Evil Escapes

Indie filmmakers like Thomas J. Churchill, Dustin Ferguson, and Mark Polonia, who have created multiple Amityville movies, recognized that using the name "Amityville" guaranteed extra attention. As a result, these films took increasingly absurd premises and had minimal connections to the actual Amityville events. Yet, they continued to draw audiences fascinated by the eerie history of the infamous house.

In Amityville Horror: The Evil Escapes, starring Patty Duke, the demonic forces lurking in the infamous Amityville house for over 300 years escape to a remote California mansion by inhabiting a lamp. The evil latches onto a little girl living in the home by taking on the form of her dead father. When it completely possesses her, it's up to a young priest to perform an exorcism and attempt to lift the curse from the desperate family. Available on TheArchive now!

Late Night with the Devil

Late Night with the Devil, starring David Dastmachian of Oppenheimer, is a refreshing take on found footage that feels authentic to a 70s late-night talk show. The film is based in 1977, when a live television broadcast goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation's living rooms. This paranormal horror does not have to rely on jump scares to terrify its audience. Available to stream on Hulu with a subscription.
