Dolly and the Divas of December
It's the most wonderful time of the year when we throw another yule log on the fire, curl up with a loved one, and watch some holiday flix. This holiday season TheArchive brings you some of the most beloved pop divas and their star turns in some of our favorite deep cuts.
Dolly Parton, Bjork, and Grace Jones are among the many December divas starring in our movies. So let's get started with a Christmas gem that stars Nashville's nicest and never naughtiest.
In Unlikely Angel Dolly Parton plays a country music singer who meets an untimely demise and learns she can’t enter heaven until she performs a good deed back on Earth. To earn her wings, she must find a mother for a widowed father and his two children in this endearing film of hope and love.
Swing is a 1999 musical romantic comedy Lisa Stansfield. This was Stansfield's film debut and she also did the soundtrack. An ex-con (Hugo Speer) dreams of putting together a swing band and getting back with his ex-girlfriend (Lisa Stansfield), now married to the cop who arrested him.
Grace Jones (#82 on the VH1 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll) plays a circus freak in in Wolf Girl, about a women with a rare genetic condition that covers her head to toe in hair and lives her life in a traveling Freak Show on display as the "Terrifying Wolf Girl."
Toni Basil (who doesn't love her song "Mickey") stars in Slaughterhouse Rock about a man who visits Alcatraz prison after having dreams about all the people who died there only to find his brother there possessed by an evil cannibal demon.
The great Della Reese stars in The Secret Path about a young white girl abused by her grandfather who finds happiness when she's taken under the wing of an older black couple.
Recent Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame inductee Carole King is featured in an episode of The Trials of Rosie O’Neill: The Reunion, Bjork stars in The Juniper Tree, and Vanessa Williams is in Fatal Bond: while she is credited as “Waitress,” this one, like the rest of these diddies, is worth the wait.
