A Valentine’s Day Treat from TheArchive

It’s almost Valentine's Day! Presently, Valentine's Day is celebrated with sweet treats, romantic dinners, and watching movies centered around love and relationships, but the origins of Valentine's Day are much different. The holiday dates back to ancient Rome, where St. Valentine, a priest, was said to have secretly married couples against Emperor Claudius II’s wishes. Over time, his legacy evolved into a celebration of love, and by the Middle Ages, handwritten valentines became a popular tradition. Fast-forward to today, and what better way to honor the holiday than with movies that capture love in all its forms?

At TheArchive, we’re celebrating the season of love with Personally Yours, a charming 2000 romantic comedy directed by Jeffrey Reiner and starring Valerie Bertinelli that brings together romance, family, and second chances. Personally Yours follows Susannah and Jesse Stanton, a couple who divorced two years ago but remain connected through their three children. As both parents attempt to move on and reenter the dating world, their kids hatch a scheme to reunite them. This film is a heartwarming, hilarious film that takes us through the rollercoaster of emotions which is love.

If you're in the mood for more romance, consider adding these classics to your watch list:

  • When Harry Met Sally (1989) – The ultimate friends-to-lovers story that redefined rom-coms.

  • Sleepless in Seattle (1993) – A love story that will have you believing in fate.

  • Ghost (1990) – a ghost tries to protect his grieving girlfriend.

  • 500 Days of Summer (2009) – A hopeless romantic, Tom Hansen, reflects on his last relationship and tries to figure out where things went wrong.

  • Amélie (2001) a shy French woman embarks on a charming quest for love and connection.

  • You've Got Mail (1998) – A nostalgic online romance that still holds up today.

Realistically, not everyone is in the mood for love stories on Valentine’s Day. If you’re single and loving it, going through a breakup, or not feeling the romance, this day can still be all about you. Here are some alternative ways to celebrate:

  • Indulge in Self-Care – Treat yourself to a spa night, a great book, or your favorite comfort meal. Valentine’s Day is not only about couples!

  • Have a Galentine’s or Palentine’s Celebration – Gather your friends for a fun night with snacks, games, and movies.

  •  Watch a Movie That Reminds You that Love Comes in Many Forms – Friendship, family, and self-love deserve just as much celebration.

  •  Binge an Anti-Romance Movie – Opt for action, comedy, or something unrelated to romance.

  •  Write Yourself a Love Letter – Sounds cheesy, but why not? Take a moment to appreciate everything you’ve accomplished and set new intentions for self-love.
