But the killing he witnessed in the war, along with losing a leg to an enemy bullet, embittered him. But a therapeutic gift awaits: a pair of Red-bone hound puppies - just like the ones he had as a boy. When Billy befriends a young neighborhood boy who reminds him of himself, the boy and the hounds become his closest friends and together they help Billy rediscover the gift of giving - ultimately rediscovering himself.
