NFL Season in Full Swing

It’s football season! Many people have been coveting the joy of tailgates, stadium food, and fantasy football leagues. The NFL has come a long way since it was founded in 1920. What started as a league with basic rules and leather helmets has evolved into a high-tech, strategy-driven, and safety-focused mega-giant of professional sports. It’s fascinating to look back at how far the league has come since its humble beginnings in 1920, and What better way to do that than by revisiting HBO’s classic show, 1st & Ten, which gave us an inside peek behind the scenes of pro football’s chaotic and scandalous world.

The Evolution of Football: From the 1800s to Today

Let’s dive into some significant shifts that have shaped the NFL into what we see today. American football has been around since 1869 when the first college football game was played between Princeton and Rutgers. The birth of professional football in the United States is considered to have occurred on November 12, 1892, when William "Pudge" Heffelfinger was paid $500 to play in a game for the Allegheny Athletic Association (AAA) against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. This was the first recorded instance of a player being paid to play football in the United States.

The Digital Era: Changing the NFL Experience

Also, the digital era has transformed the NFL experience. Social media, streaming services, and other online platforms have changed how we consume football, making it easier than ever to catch highlights, watch live games, and get behind-the-scenes access. The league’s international reach has expanded, with games played in cities like London and Mexico City, boosting the NFL’s global appeal.

1st & Ten: Reflecting Football’s Wild Side

The modern NFL is not just about the games; it’s an entire experience shaped by digital transformations, drama, and huge personalities—much like the fictional world of 1st & Ten. The show is an early example of HBO original programming. It’s a sitcom following a pro football team's female owner (Delta Burke) and a pre-Law and Order Christopher Meloni. The show ran from 1984 to 1990 and also starred O.J Simpson

1st & Ten portrays a world, much like our own, where football is just as much about the game as it is about the people playing it and the decisions they make in their personal lives. In the show, the California Bulls are a team filled with outrageous characters, wild storylines, and on-field (and off-field) drama. From ego-driven professional players to helpless coaches and wild locker-room antics, the show captures the unfiltered side of football that fans rarely get to see.

As we dive deeper into the current NFL season, remember that the drama, excitement, and unpredictability we love today are the same elements that made 1st & Ten iconic. The show captured the spirit of football in all its messy, magnificent glory, much like the real NFL does every week.
